Detroit college sholarship program expands to include all seniors
ANN ARBOR, MI
(Michigan Radio) -
The Detroit Promise Scholarship started at Cody High School. Seniors there received a total of two thousand dollars. The program expanded to six high schools last year and the grant dropped to five hundred dollars.
The scholarship is now open to seniors at all 40 Detroit public high schools.
Nat Pernick is director of the scholarship program. He says he's still fundraising, so he's not sure how much the class of 2011 will get. Down the road, he hopes to be able to offer $10,000 scholarships to students:
"That would be a pretty good incentive for people to stay in school, for families to enroll in DPS, and for people to consider moving to Detroit or staying in Detroit."
The only requirements are that students apply by December and enroll at a public college or university in Michigan. The deadline to register for the scholarship is December first.
