Bing briefs Detroit Council on reshaping Detroit
(2010-09-08)
Dave Bing
(Michigan Radio) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says his administration is just starting to put together a plan to reshape the city.

The Mayor briefed the Detroit City Council on his strategy Wednesday.

Bing sought to quash rumors about his administration's land use strategy, emphasizing it's not a "land grab" or a plan to push people out of their homes.

Instead, the Mayor says it's about reshaping the city to best utilize scarce resources. The city will hold meetings this month to get public input on a plan that will be rolled out over the next 12 to 18 months.

Bing says the city will make every effort not to force people out of their homes, but also says it's considering every option. "No, I can't tell you that anything's off the table," he said in response to a Council member's question. "But we want to be respectful."

It also looks like urban farming won't be a big component of the final plan. Bing says urban farming is good for some communities, but he doesn't see it developing as a major industry in Detroit.
