Kalamazoo River oil spill clean-up progressing
ANN ARBOR, MI
(Michigan Radio) -
Federal officials say the oil spill clean-up along the Kalamazoo River is getting closer to completion.
A ruptured pipeline leaked more than 800 thousand gallons of crude oil near Marshall in late July.
The EPA's Mark Durno says more than a thousand workers have done a good job collecting oil from the Kalamazoo River and the area surrounding the spill.
But Durno admits there will be oil left in less accessible parts of the spill zone.
"There's more of an ecological advantage to leave the oil behind than going in there and trying to 'yank it out'," says Durno.
The EPA hopes to complete major clean-up operations along the Kalamazoo River by the end of the month.
