First Detroit schools construction project completed
(2010-09-02)
(Associated Press) - The Detroit Public Schools says the first construction project under a $500.5 million capital improvement program in the district is finished.

On Thursday, DPS says it will unveil updates to John R. King school on Detroit's northwest side.

The $10.7 million renovation includes a new, 260-seat black box theater for the pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school's performing arts-centered curriculum. The work took about three months.

John R. King also got a new atrium, science and technology labs and playground equipment.

Renovations at Fitzgerald Elementary and Marcus Garvey School also wrap up this week. Detroit students start school Tuesday.

The district is building or renovating 18 schools with money from voter-approved bonds.
