Bernero takes "Main Street" campaign to metro Detroit
(2010-09-01)
Virg Bernero
(Michigan Radio) - Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero took his campaign for Governor to the Detroit area Wednesday.

Bernero and his running mate, Brenda Lawrence, took their "Fighting for Main Street" tour to Lawrence's hometown of Southfield.

There, both touted themselves as friends of small business and local economic development.

But Bernero also took his usual shots at Wall Street. He cited the story of a small alternative energy business that would hire workers if it could get a reasonable loan.

"Wall Street has written off Michigan and left us for dead," Bernero says. "You heard it here: small business cannot get access to capital. They would be hiring people right now if they could just have regular access."

Bernero says part of the solution is to create a "Michigan Main Street Bank." He also wants to tie business tax incentives and abatements to job creation.
