Election Roundup: August 4th, 2010
Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is the Democrat's candidate for Governor. He beat state House speaker Andy Dillon in yesterday's primary.
Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder will represent Republicans in the general election.
He beat out Congressman Pete Hoekstra, state Attorney General Mike Cox, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and state Senator Tom George.
There will be no eighth term in Congress for Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick. State Senator Hansen Clarke beat the Detroit Democrat in the state's 13th Congressional District. Kilpatrick is the sixth incumbent lawmaker to lose this year.
Former U.S. Representative Tim Walberg won the Republican primary in Michigan's 7th Congressional district. His win sets up a rematch with current Congressman Mark Schauer in November. Democrat Schauer beat then-incumbent Walberg for the seat two years ago.
Former state lawmaker Rocky Raczkowski won in Michigan's 9th District Republican congressional primary. He'll face first-term Democratic incumbent Gary Peters in November. Peters ran unopposed in yesterday's primary.
State Representative Justin Amash has won the Republican congressional primary in Michigan's 3rd District. Incumbent Representative Vernon Ehlers is retiring from the seat. Amash will face Grand Rapids attorney Pat Miles in the general election.
Both state Senator Jason Allen and Doctor Dan Benishek say they've won in the race for the Republican nomination in Michigan's 1st Congressional District. A recount appears likely. The Secretary of State's website shows the two candidates have just one vote separating them. Benishek is ahead. The winner of the Republican primary faces Democratic state Representative Gary McDowell on the November ballot. The 1st Congressional seat is currently held by Democrat Bart Stupak. He announced his retirement earlier this year.
Ann Arbor Democrats Rebekah Warren and Jeff Irwin won their primary races yesterday. State Representative Warren beat out state Representative Pam Byrnes for Michigan's 18th district state senate seat. Meanwhile, Irwin, who serves on the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, beat Ned Staebler in the state's 53rd district state house race.
