The state is using federal money from the Department of Energy to distribute the refunds, according to Stephanie Epps, appliance analyst for Michigan's Bureau of Energy Systems.
"They want to reduce greenhouse gasses and encourage replacement with new goods and also spur economic growth and save energy," Epps says.
The state has over $9 million to distribute in refunds. Epps says the program will last as long as the money does.
