Detroit Nonprofit Organizes Aid to Haiti

(Michigan Radio) - A Detroit nonprofit organization says the people of Haiti are going to need long-term help.

World Medical Relief helps get supplies, equipment and medicine to people in need at home and abroad.

Founded in the 1960s, the group sorts and packs donations and then arranges for shipping.

Josephine Jabara says it takes a lot of coordination to get materials to where they're needed:

"We get requests from NGOs that are on the ground, and know what is needed, to make sure we don't shoot in the dark, she says. "We don't just send stuff out there and then it doesn't go anywhere."

Jabara says the University of Michigan just made a very large donation of medical supplies for Haiti.

She also says there's an urgent need for over-the-counter medicines -- she's hoping a corporate sponsor will help with that.
