Detroit Area Muslims Condemn Plane Attack
Members of those communities say "no legitimate faith or political ideology could ever justify the injuring or murdering of innocent civilians."
Accused bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is a Nigerian national acting on behalf of a Yemen-based Al Qaeda group.
Michigan Council on American Islamic Relations Director Dawud Walid directly addressed Al Qaeda sympathizers while calling the attack "un-Islamic."
"To members of Al Qaeda and their sympathizers: we say your actions constitute irhab, which means terrorism in Arabic, and haraba, unlawful warfare, not jihad, which is legitimate striving in the cause of God," Walid said.
Walid also asked Americans and law enforcement to "resist the temptation" to characterize all Muslims, Arabs, and West Africans as potential terrorists.
