(Michigan Radio) - Kildee has been an elected county official for twenty five years. During that time he's focused on rebuilding and reusing vacant and abandoned sites in Michigan. Now Kildee wants to devote all of his energy to that kind of work on a national scale.

He's created the non-profit think-tank called The Center for Land Reform. It will focus on policy and advocacy work that makes it easier to redevelop and reuse old buildings in urban areas.

"I think in the long term this approach will make our state and our cities more economically financially competitive," he says. "What I see is a renaissance for cities, cities will become important again they will become valued again and they will not be treated as a disposable commodity."

The think-tank will have offices in Flint and Washington D.C. Kildee says the group will initially focus on cities in the northeast and Midwest.
