Kilpatrick Restitution Hearing Resumes Today
(2009-12-07)
Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick
(Michigan Radio) -

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is due to return to a Wayne County courtroom Monday morning. He'll once again face questions about his ability to pay nearly one million dollars in restitution.

Kwame Kilpatrick has weathered sometimes searing questioning in previous court appearances about why he has had trouble making court-ordered installments to pay off his restitution.

Kilpatrick was ordered to pay restitution as part of a deal for his pleading guilty to obstruction of justice for misleading the city council into accepting a multi-million dollar legal settlement. Kilpatrick had hoped settling the case would prevent knowledge of a sexual affair from becoming public.

Much of the questioning has centered around the source of money that has enabled him to live in an exclusive neighborhood in Texas. Prosecutors allege Kilpatrick has spent more than 700 thousand dollars this past year.

Kilpatrick testified that he received nearly a quarter million dollar loan from several prominent Detroit businessmen. But otherwise, the former mayor says his finances are controlled by his wife. Kilpatrick invoked his constitutional right against self-incrimination last month when he was questioned about the source of another loan.
