Detroit Arists Eligible for $50K Grants
In order to be eligible for the grant, you need to live and work in one of the communities where the Knight Brothers owned newspapers. That includes Detroit, Philadelphia, and Miami, among others.
Dennis Scholl is with the Knight Foundation. He says the grants will help recognize not only the importance of art, but of the individual artist:
"I think people will stop and think a little bit about the fact that art just doesn't come from the sky. That people are in their studios, they're on the dance floor, they're sitting alone with a typewriter and creating."
The fellows will get an additional $5,000 to do an event in their community, to show the community what their practice is about.
The new Knight Fellowship is awarded in conjunction with the annual United States Artists Fellowship program. The first two USA Knight Fellows will be announced in Los Angeles on December 14th.
