Massive 'Table and Chairs' Sculpture In Grand Rapids To Move
(2009-11-24)
The table and chairs sculpture in downtown Grand Rapids will move in the spring. Dustin Dwyer
(Michigan Radio) - A giant set of table and chairs that's been perched in downtown Grand Rapids since ArtPrize will soon get a new home.

It's 30 feet tall, made out of steel and wood, and covered in colorful painted images and inspirational phrases. Officially, the 15 ton ArtPrize entry is titled, "The Furniture City Sets the Table For the World of Art," but most people just refer to it as "the table and chairs."

The table and chairs has sat on top of a pedestrian bridge over the Grand River, since September. Thousands saw the sculpture during ArtPrize, and it took eighth place in the competition.

Now, after weeks of people in town speculating about the giant piece of art, it's creators have announced a new home. Next spring, the table and chairs will move to a new Salvation Army Kroc Center on the city's south side. There, builders say the sculpture will sit near a park, and provide shade to kids and families.
