Early Thanksgiving Meal In Downtown Grand Rapids
(2009-11-23)
People line up to eat at the "1st Annual Downtown Turkey Throwdown" in Grand Rapids. Dustin Dwyer
(Michigan Radio) - More than 70 people in downtown Grand Rapids got an early taste of Thanksgiving dinner. It was at an event called the "1st Annual Downtown Turkey Throwdown."

Organizers thought up the event just a week ago. They promoted it on Facebook and Twitter. This morning, they got up early to cook turkeys and set up some makeshift tables on top of sawhorses downtown.

Most people who came brought a dish to share, and there was plenty of food .
Cindy Grace is one of the people who helped organize the event. She carved up turkeys with a plastic fork and knife as dozens of people lined up.

"I mean, we thought if we had 15 people show up and we shared a meal, that we would have been successful," she says. "This is beyond anything we thought would happen, so we're very pleased."

People also brought non-perishable food to donate to a local charity. The event is expected to be back next year.
