Civil Rights Groups Hope To Meet With U.S. AG Eric Holder
(2009-11-19)
Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah
(Michigan Radio) - U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will be in Detroit Thursday to speak at a banquet for minority groups and law enforcement agencies.

Some Muslim and civil rights leaders hope to meet with Holder while he's in town to talk about the recent FBI shooting of a Detroit imam.

Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah was killed last month during an FBI raid on a warehouse in Dearborn after he allegedly pulled a gun on FBI agents who were trying to arrest him.

Now several Muslim and civil rights groups want the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the shooting.

Ron Scott is with the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, one of the groups calling for the investigation. Scott says he plans to bring up the shooting when Holder is in Detroit for the banquet:

"We expect him to comment on it. Otherwise it becomes sort of an exercise in a nice evening without the substance in people's lives."

Scott received verbal confirmation from the U.S. Attorney's Office that Holder will meet with Scott and a few other community leaders before the banquet.

Holder is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at a banquet for ALPACT, Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust.
