Detroit To Add 150 Patrol Officers
The Police Department is in the midst of re-assigning 100 officers from administrative and other duties to street patrol.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says the city will also use a Federal grant to hire 50 new officers. "We were able to solicit 11 million dollars out of the Obama Administration for our COPS program," Bing told reporters and community members at the North Rosedale Community Center. "Those officers will be trained over the next 26 weeks, and those 50 will be on our streets also."
Police Chief Warren Evans says the new officers will target the city's highest-crime areas. Evans says the additional officers are part of a larger effort to turn around the troubled Police Department, which has been plagued by slow response times, low case closure rates, and slow progress making Federally-mandated improvements.
