Stabenow Says Health Care Reform Is Key To Economic Recovery
Stabenow told a Detroit Economic Club audience that it's most cost-effective for everyone to have health insurance. She says that can be done by creating an "insurance exchange," where health care providers could bid for customers among a pool of uninsured people and small businesses.
Stabenow says the Senate Finance Committee has also forged a deal with providers to lower costs and protect customers. "There has been an agreement that in exchange for more customers, there would be reforms in insurance," she says. "And I think that's incredibly important as we go forward."
Stabenow says that agreement makes it possible to pay for the health care overhaul through the existing system. She says she's also pushing for provisions important to Michigan, including a Federal re-insurance program for early retirees.
