Flu Bug Bites U of M
The University of Michigan is preparing for an unusually high number of flu cases this season.
Around 40 to 50 students a day visited student health services last week with flu-like symptoms. Medical director Robert Ernst says the numbers tapered off at the end of the week. But he believes that's just a temporary lull.
Tests on students with the flu show they all have something in common. "There is circulating influenza within our patient population and all of the influenza that is circulating currently is the H1N1 virus," says Ernst.
That could mean a dramatic rise in the number of flu cases once regular strains start to appear.
The University Health Service is asking students to help stop the spread of flu. Recommendations include washing hands frequently, keeping hands away from the face and staying home when sick.
