(Michigan Radio) - The Kowalski Sausage Company in Hamtramck needs room to expand, but it may have to go elsewhere to find it.

Four generations of the Kowalski family have operated the business in Hamtramck for more than 80 years.

But Michael Kowalski, who runs the business with sister, Linda Kowalski Jacob, says they need to streamline AND expand - and that may mean moving.

"We have two factories that are separate buildings that are about a mile and a half away from each other, and a third warehouse building," Kowalski says. "So there was this need for us to try to consolidate everything into one facility. The newest part of our building is 55 years old."

The Kowalskis are considering a site in Madison Heights.

Hamtramck City Manager Bill Cooper says the city's doing everything it can to keep Kowalski.

"He's almost synonymous with Hamtramck," Cooper says. "So we'd really hate to lose him.

Kowalski Sausage employs about 200 people.
