(Associated Press) -

Gov.-elect Rick Snyder says he plans to give lawmakers a two-year budget proposal he wants them to pass by July 1, instead of dragging the process into the fall.

Snyder told The Associated Press in a Tuesday interview that he has until March 14 to present the proposal, but plans to do it earlier. He also plans to deliver his first annual State of the State address in mid-January rather than at the end of the month.

He says the quickened pace is about "setting the tone" for rapid change.

As Michigan begins to emerge from its decade-long economic slump, Snyder says his first priority is to eliminate any hurdles to that recovery. He plans to cut business taxes in the budget that takes effect next fall.
