UK: Gangs and hardcore activists behind violence
(2010-12-13)
(Associated Press) -
Home Secretary Theresa May says street gangs infiltrated a London protest last week in which demonstrators attacked a car carrying Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla.

Several hundred people vandalized government buildings and battled riot police during a demonstration against planned increases in college tuition fees.

May told the House of Commons on Monday that "hardcore activists and street gangs" joined the rally to carry out acts of violence.

She said a significant number of the 15,000 protesters in central London were involved in disorder.

May confirmed that a protester managed to make contact with Camilla during an attack on the couple's Rolls-Royce. A review of royal security will be completed by next week, May said.
