(Michigan Radio) -

Enbridge Energy has hired former Detroit mayor Dennis Archer to look over the process the company created to compensate people affected by July's oil spill.

Enbridge CEO Patrick Daniel says Archer's legal expertise should help him decide if the process is fair to those seeking money from the pipeline company. Archer is a former state Supreme Court justice and former president the American Bar Association.

"Those qualifications really make him ideal to come in and assess the process...and provide any recommendations to us," says Daniel.

Enbridge CEO Patrick Daniel has been trying to discourage people from filing lawsuits since July's oil spill. Daniel says the company has settled or is in the process of settling about a thousand claims.

Several law firms are pursuing class action lawsuits.
