Bing debuts new Detroit land use plan
(2010-08-17)
Dave Bing
(Michigan Radio) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has announced a series of public meetings to discuss a new land use plant.

It's a plan that could greatly reshape Michigan's largest city. About 35%of Detroit's land is vacant. Bing has said finding better uses for that land is a key long-term priority for his administration.

Bing's administration is now gearing up to develop a so-called "strategic framework plan." The Mayor says it will go beyond land use to sketch out a broader plan to stabilize Detroit communities.

Bing has named two city officials and a nationally-renowned urban planner to implement the plan. But he emphasizes it's still a work in progress.

The city will hold five public meetings next month to get citizen input.

The Mayor sayshu that's crucial to overcoming initial public fears that any new land use plan might involve forced relocation. City officials now say it won't.
