Michigan gets new infusion of federal money to help homeowners
The federal government is adding another two billion dollars to a program called the Hardest Hit Fund. It's designed to help people avoid foreclosure while they look for a new job or get job training.
Michigan is one of the states getting the money because its unemployment rate of 14.1 percent is higher than the national average.
Herb Allison is with the Treasury Department.
"The point of hardest hit is to give state agencies some flexibility to tailor programs to local needs," Allison says. "Conditions differ dramatically in different parts of the country. That's why we have the Hardest-Hit fund."
Unemployed homeowners who are least three months delinquent on their mortgage can ask their lender for an application for the hardest hit fund.
