GM Vehicles Switch To More Environmentally-Friendly Air Conditioner Refrigerant by 2013
(2010-07-26)
(Michigan Radio) - General Motors will use a more environmentally-friendly air conditioning refrigerant in its vehicles by 2013.

The product is made by Honeywell.

Terrence Hahn is General Manager of Honeywell's Fluorine Products.

"The existing material has an atmospheric lifetime of 13 years. Our material has an atmospheric lifetime of 11 days," says Hahn. "(So) the lower the atmospheric lifetime for a particular material, then the lower the global warming potential as well."

Hahn says the new material is pricier, but using it will also help GM meet stricter greenhouse gas regulations set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Hahn says Honeywell will work with other auto manufacturers to get the new refrigerant into more vehicles.
