UAW, Jesse Jackson Announce "Jobs, Justice, Peace" Campaign
Jackson and UAW President Bob King are explicitly patterning their campaign after the American civil rights movement. But they say this time their objective is restoring American jobs, especially in the manufacturing sector.
King, who took over as UAW President last month, says the union has a long history of social activism--and now is the right time to reinvigorate it.
"We're gonna be out there in the streets demanding social and economic justice for all working families, all workers, in this country and around the world," King said at an event kicking off the campaign in Detroit.
The coalition plans to launch the campaign with an August 28th march in Detroit. That will be the 47th anniversary of Doctor Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
They'll follow that with an October march on Washington.
