Asian Carp May Threaten Great Lakes Fishing
(2010-07-07)
(wned) - There is growing concern about the Asian carp entering the Great Lakes where the predatory fish can eat and breed to its heart content; and in doing so, say many experts, do grievous, perhaps irreparable harm to the multi-billion dollar fishing industry and to the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Right now, the Asian carp is near Chicago.

"It will devastate the fishing industry. It will hurt our small businesses," U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand told reporters in Buffalo yesterday.

The fish, which can weigh as much as 100 pounds, could dominate marine life in the Great Lakes.

"They're (Asian Carp) just too close to the Great Lakes, they're within 6 miles," said Gillibrand.

"What we want to do is shut the down the locks (near Lake Michigan)."

Gillibrand, who is on the campaign trail seeking a full, six-year term, admits shutting down the locks "temporarily" is not a final solution.
