Eastern Michigan University will not be raising tuition next year.

The Ypsilanti school's regents approved next year's budget Tuesday, without raising tuition, or room and board costs to students.

"We were looking to make an early statement," says Roy Wilbanks, the chair of the EMU Board of Regents, "We hope were kind of the leaders in this area. So we think we made a good choice, and we think the timing was right for Eastern Michigan University."

EMU officials hope growing student enrollment will offset an expected three percent cut in state aid to higher education. School officials believe this is the first time in more than 30 years that EMU has gone without an annual tuition increase.
