(Michigan Radio) -

US Census forms are due back April 1st.

Some Michigan counties are doing a better job than others in getting their residents to mail back their census forms.

Michigan's US Census return rate is slightly ahead of the national average, with roughly half of the state's households already mailing back the census forms.

But not every part of the state is responding well.

Only about a quarter of the census forms mailed to addresses in west Michigan's Lake County have been returned.

Elizabeth Fleury is a US Census official in Muskegon. She says the high number of vacation homes in Lake County affects its census numbers.

"They've either been counted already in another location or they're going to return their census forms," says Fleury, "And of course, if they miss this return time they will be visited by an enumerator."

Fleury says census workers will be knocking on many vacation home doors in Lake County this summer.
