State Lawmakers To Probe Tax Credit Scandal This Week
(2010-03-22)
Richard A. Short (Michigan Department of Corrections)
(Michigan Radio) -

State lawmakers will hold hearings this week to determine how a convicted embezzler was able to get 9 million dollars in state tax credits.

Richard Short received the tax credit package last week. A day later he was arrested on a parole violation. The tax credits were rescinded.

Governor Granholm supports the legislative probe, but she warns lawmakers should be careful not to discourage businesses from seeking future tax credits.

"I certainly don't want a signal to be sent to businesses or our economic development partners that we're going to slow down bringing jobs to Michigan," says Granholm.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has pledged to perform background checks on future tax credit applicants.
