The Beautiful Game In Detroit
(2010-02-21)
(Michigan Radio) - Detroit residents are organizing a new soccer league that will start in May. Each team represents a different historic neighborhood in the city.

Sean Mann is the founder of The Detroit City Futbol League. He lives in the Hubbard Farms neighborhood, which is also known as Mexicantown. Mann realized that often when his neighborhood unites, it's not for a good reason.

"Most of the time when we come together it's fighting blight or trying to organize crime patrols. So I thought it'd be fun to get people in the neighborhood to come together for something that wasn't related to crime or blight."

So far there are seventeen Detroit neighborhoods represented in the soccer league. The league is co-ed and open to adults who live in Detroit and also outside of the city. Mann hopes the league can show people who live outside of the city that there are many thriving and unique neighborhoods within Detroit.
