Asian Carp Battle Shifts to Ypsilanti
(2010-02-17)
(MPRN) -

Ypsilanti will host what promises to be a contentious public hearing on the potential threat Asian Carp pose to the Great Lakes.

State officials complain the federal plan to stop the carp is too limited to protect the Lakes.

At the public hearing, The Army Corps of Engineers will once again outline its plan to use high tech electronic barriers to discourage Asian Carp from swimming through a shipping canal connecting Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River system.

Asian Carp are an invasive species that have come to dominate the life of every stretch of the nation's largest waterway. There are fears the carp could threaten the Great Lakes multi-billion dollar fishing industry.

Officials in Michigan and other Great Lakes states say the best way to prevent the carp from entering Lake Michigan would be to close the shipping canal.

State officials have asked the courts and the Obama administration to intervene, to no avail.
