Asian Carp Summit Falls Short
(2010-02-08)
(Michigan Radio) -

A summit in Washington D.C. today failed to settle a dispute between Great Lakes states and the Obama Administration on how to stop Asian Carp from getting into the Great Lakes.

Michigan and other states want a canal near Chicago closed to prevent the carp from reaching Lake Michigan.

But President Obama and Illinois officials say there is not enough evidence that the Asian Carp is poised to enter the Great Lakes eco-system to warrant closing the canal. Nancy Sutley leads the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

"We are being guided by the best available science which tells us we can and will stop the Asian Carp from establishing themselves in the Great Lakes," says Sutley.

The Obama administration did pledge to spend $78 million to stop the giant Asian carp, which could possibly endanger the Great Lakes region's $7 billion fishing industry. The money represents funding already earmarked for the Great Lakes.
