Hoekstra To Introduce Carp Legislation
The carp are an invasive species that could pose a severe threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Last week, Congressman Dave Camp and Senator Debbie Stabenow introduced legislation that would force the Army Corps of Engineers to close shipping locks to prevent the carp from entering the lakes.
Now Pete Hoekstra says he has his own legislation that would deal with the issue long-term, and deal with what happens if the fish do make it to the Lakes.
"What is our plan to respond quickly and in a deadly fashion to make sure that we can wipe out any infestation?" he asks.
Hoekstra says his legislation would give authority to a single agency to deal with the Carp population. And it would spell out what to do if the carp do make it into the Lakes.
