Layoffs To Hit West Michigan Newspapers
(2010-01-08)
(Michigan Radio) - The Booth Newspaper group says it will lay off workers at the Kalamazoo Gazette, Muskegon Chronicle and Grand Rapids Press.

Booth is not saying how many layoffs there will be. Last year, the three West Michigan papers avoided layoffs, while the company shut down the Ann Arbor News, and cut the Flint Journal, Bay City Times and Saginaw News to three day a week delivery.

The three West Michigan papers will continue to have seven day delivery, but there will be further consolidations between them. All three papers will now be copy edited, designed and printed in the Grand Rapids area.

The newspaper owners would not make anyone available for a recorded interview, but in a published statement, the company says the three newspapers are actually in a better situation than a year ago. It says the latest steps are an effort to find more efficiencies.
