A Detroit political consultant facing two federal corruption trials has been charged with assault.

Sam Riddle is accused of pointing a shotgun at his companion, Mary Waters, and threatening her at their apartment Monday. He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of felonious assault and using a firearm during a felony.

Defense lawyer John Minock says Riddle is under pressure as he prepares for his federal trials.

Riddle is charged with getting bribes for then-Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers, the wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers. Separately, Riddle and Waters are charged in a suburban bribery case.

Riddle must move out of the apartment and wear an electronic tether.
