Lawmakers Consider Online Voter Registration
(2009-12-10)
(Michigan Radio) - Michigan residents could register to vote online under two measures being considered in Lansing.

Voter registration could be as easy as a few clicks on your computer, if Michigan lawmakers approve a two-bill package.

Representative Lesia Liss is the sponsor. She says there's a sense of urgency to move on the measures:

"Many Secretary of States are closing, from county to county, and city to city, and this would be really convenient," Liss says. "You know, for those who live in rural areas, and can't get to a Secretary of State, perhaps they can register online."

Liss says the system would also appeal to younger voters.

She says in Arizona, the online system is credited with increasing voter registration by almost ten percent in two years.

Washington is the only other state that offers online registration.
