(Michigan Radio) -

Detroit's Metropolitan Airport will install five wind turbines on its property.

It's part of the airport's attempt to explore ways to save energy and reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Michael Conway is DTW's director of public affairs. He says the airport will spend close to eighty thousand dollars on the turbines.

"We won't be able to recover that for many, many, many years. But for us the importance of this, this project is as a demonstration," says Conway.

The turbines are made by a Michigan company and will power outdoor lights at the airport.

DTW has already taken other steps to save energy, including solar panels and energy-efficient lights.
