Kwame Kilpatrick Takes 'The Fifth'
Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick took 'the Fifth' during a court hearing into his finances today.
Prosecutors claim Kilpatrick lives like 'a multi-millionaire' in Dallas, while trying to avoid paying restitution for his criminal conviction.
Kwame Kilpatrick owes Detroit nearly a million dollars as part of his guilty plea to obstruction of justice.
The court hearing was heated from the start, with Wayne County assistant prosecutor Athina Siringus repeatedly demanding Kwame Kilpatrick explain his finances.
At one point, the judge told Kilpatrick to stop being evasive. That led to an exchange between Siringus and Kilpatrick over the source of one loan.
SIRINGUS: "Who did you borrow this money from Sir?"
KILPATRICK: "I paid it back already."
SIRINGUS: "OK, who did you borrow it from Sir?"
KILPATRICK: "(long pause)...I'm gonna take the fifth."
Prosecutors claim Kilpatrick spent $755 thousand this year. Much of that money apparently came from several prominent Detroit business leaders, who gave Kilpatrick more than 200 thousand dollars, before he moved to Dallas. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
