Detroit Schools Want City To Pay Taxes
Some school board members in Detroit are calling for a state investigation into property taxes owed to the district by the city of Detroit.
The school district's state-appointed manager has already asked for close to eight and a half million dollars in property taxes he says the city owes DPS.
But school board member Annie Carter says the city might owe millions more going back several years. And she wants the state to look into it.
"All I'm asking for is a simple investigation,' says Carter, "What is happening to our tax dollars?"
There's some speculation that such an inquiry could ultimately lead to a state takeover of Detroit's finances. But Carter says that's not her intent.
The school board is scheduled to vote on the resolution at its Thursday meeting. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
