ACLU Accuses Detroit Schools of 'Dragnet' Searches of Students
(2009-11-05)
(Michigan Radio) -

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is warning a Detroit high school to back off its searches of students.

The ACLU says students at Detroit's Mumford High School have complained about dragnet searches.

Mark Fancher of the ACLU says teachers and police officers can only conduct searches if they suspect a student of wrongdoing.

"What has happened according to the accounts that we've received is that every student, regardless of whether there is any suspicion at all, is required to submit to these very intrusive searches," says Fancher.

The ACLU and Detroit Public Schools settled a lawsuit alleging similar searches in 2006.

A school district spokeswoman says ongoing problems at Mumford have led to increased security and sweeps. But Jennifer Mrozowski denies unconstitutional mass searches.
