(Michigan Radio) -

Detroit Edison is getting nearly $84 million to install so-called 'smart-grid' technology throughout southeast Michigan.

The grant is part of a $3.4 billion federal program to upgrade the nation's electricity system.

Scott Simons is a DTE spokesman. He says the money will expand pilot programs which have installed more efficient meter reading equipment in homes.

"The backbone of the program is what we call 'advanced metering technology'," says Simons, "We've already tested the technology on Grosse Ile. We're installing those types of meters on Parsons Island and part of Bloomfield Township."

Simons says it will take 5 years to install new 'smart-grid' meter readers in more than 600 thousand homes in southeast Michigan. Whirlpool Corporation is also getting nearly $20 million to manufacturer 'smart' appliances, which will reduce electricity consumption.
