Budget Stalemate in Lansing
The budget stalemate at the state Capitol continues.
Governor Granholm and Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop met Wednesday for more than an hour. But Bishop did not agree to support more revenue to help balance the budget. The governor says she will use her line-item veto power to free enough money to avert cuts to college scholarships, Medicaid, and local governments.
The Republican leader says he will release budget bills that have been sitting in the Senate to the governor. But he says there will be consequences if she follows through on her threat of sweeping vetoes.
"I let the governor know that if she chooses to veto anything that we've sent her as part of our bipartisan agreement, that there's going to be a hole in the budget, and we don't have any expectation of re-funding those holes," says Bishop."
The governor says money for schools is dropping even faster than expected. She says that makes the need for new revenue for schools even more urgent to avoid bigger cuts to K-through-12 schools. © Copyright 2012, MPRN
