Democrats Talking About New Tax Revenue
(2009-10-06)
State Capitol Building, Lansing, Michigan
(MPRN) -

The Democratic-controlled state House may start voting this on ways to increase state tax revenue.
Democrats are talking about putting a freeze on the earned-income tax credit. New taxes on tobacco products or bottled water seem less likely.

House Majority Floor Leader Kathy Angerer says everything is still on the table for discussion.

"What you're also going to see is Democratic priorities respected - we're going to be working hard to protect health care for children and the elderly, police and fire protection, the Promise Grant that makes sure our - our students - are ready for the 21st century jobs that are out there," says Angerer.

But representatives from the Michigan League for Human Services say freezing the earned-income tax credit would only hurt the working poor. And they say the people who receive that money help stimulate the economy. The League says lawmakers should consider extending the sales tax to services, instead.
