New Detroit Police Monitor Hired
(2009-10-05)
Robert Warshaw
(Associated Press) -

A judge overseeing reforms at the Detroit Police Department has approved the hiring of a new monitor to keep track of the city's progress. U.S. District Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. on Monday approved Robert Warshaw as monitor. Warshaw was jointly proposed by the city and the Justice Department. Warshaw's career includes work as the deputy U.S. drug czar and police chief in Rochester, N.Y. Since 2003, Detroit police have been monitored for changes in the use of force and the treatment of suspects. Warshaw's consulting firm, Police Performance Solutions, will charge $1.1 million a year, about 50 percent less than was paid to Sheryl Robinson Wood, who quit in July after text messages showed a personal relationship between her and ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
