Budget Cuts & Local Libraries
Local libraries are preparing for state budget cuts.
Just how deep the cuts will be felt depends on each library.
Legislators are expected to approve a 40% cut in state money earmarked for local libraries. The amount of money is actually fairly small for most local libraries, but it's just another squeeze on already tight budgets.
Lance Werner is the director of the Capital Area District Library system, which operates more than a dozen libraries in Ingham County. He says the proposed state cuts will amount to about one percent of Capitol Area's annual budget. But Werner notes the library system's other revenue sources are also down.
"Whatever happens....we'll just do the best we can with it," says Werner.
Other local libraries are looking at cutting back on their purchases of new books as well some other budget trimmings as a result of state budget reductions. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
