Sources: Michigan Prison Won't House Terrorist Suspects
Congressman Pete Hoekstra believes the Obama administration has decided not to send Guantanamo Bay detainees to a prison in Standish. But he admits he's not sure.
Hoekstra says the administration has refused to discuss its plans for relocating terrorism suspects from the prison in Cuba.
"I would hope if they have taken Standish off the list they would let the people of Michigan know, they would let the governor know, and they would let the congressional delegation know," says Hoekstra.
The prospect of Gitmo detainees coming to Standish drew mixed reactions.
Some people fear the move could make Michigan a target for terrorists.
Others supported turning the state prison into a federal lock-up, in hopes of keeping jobs in Standish.
Standish's future remains unclear. A White House spokesman says the Gitmo prison will not close as planned in January. © Copyright 2012, Michigan Radio
