Germany Signs EU's Lisbon Treaty
(2009-09-25)
(Associated Press) - German President Horst Koehler's office says he has signed the European Union's reform treaty completing its ratification by the 27-nation bloc's most populous nation.

Spokesman Martin Kothe says Koehler signed the ratification document for the so-called Lisbon Treaty on Friday.

German lawmakers have long since approved the treaty itself, but Koehler held off signing it into law pending a legal challenge.

The country's highest court dismissed complaints that the treaty hands too much power to Brussels but demanded changes to accompanying laws that govern the rights of the German parliament. Lawmakers completed those changes earlier this month.

Only Ireland is submitting the treaty to a popular vote. It holds a referendum next week.
