Good News in the Pumpkin Patch
(2009-09-27)
(Michigan Radio) -

Michigan pumpkin growers may export more of their crop out of state than usual this fall.

Bad weather is being blamed for a poor harvest along the east coast, especially in New England.

That could be good news to Michigan's 12 hundred pumpkin growers.

"I think there (are) some opportunities," says Ken Nye, with the Michigan Farm Bureau, " We do ship pumpkins out of the state. Obviously, most of the ones we grow are used within the borders of the state. Certainly it provides an opportunity for our folks that might not be there next year."

Michigan is the third largest producer of pumpkins in the U.S., behind Illinois and Pennsylvania.
