ArtPrize Kickoff Only A Few Days Away
(2009-09-21)

(Michigan Radio) - ArtPrize officially starts Wednesday in Grand Rapids. More than 1,200 artists will show their work throughout downtown for nearly three weeks.

Over the past several weeks, ArtPrize projects have been showing up all over downtown Grand Rapids - from paintings in galleries to a 30-foot tall set of table and chairs that was installed on a bridge. Tomorrow, a 100-foot-long sculpture of the Loch Ness Monster goes in the river.

ArtPrize founder Rick DeVos says it all helps drive the discussion about art in the city.

"The goal of ArtPrize is really about culture-shaping and culture-shifting to be in relation to arts in a new and more vital way," DeVos says.

As part of that, DeVos says the winner of ArtPrize will be decided by popular vote. Voters can register online. The top prize for the competition is $250 thousand. The winner will be announced October 10th.
